Bogus Callers

Checking the identity of a caller

A genuine caller will always be happy to confirm who they are, why they are calling and the accreditation scheme they belong to.

  • All our genuine DEAs are issued with identification cards. They will always carry their ID card and will show it to you on calling at your home.
  • They will be happy to wait outside whilst you telephone us to confirm who they are. If in doubt telephone us on to get verification. DO NOT phone the number on the card if it is not shown as 0845 217 9778.

If the caller does not have an identity card send them away. If they do have a card please check it very carefully:

  • Is the photo on the card the same as the person at the door?
  • Is the card valid and not out of date?
  • Has the card been tampered with in any way?
  • Is the company sign or logo the right one? All our ID cards have the Northgate logo

If you are unhappy or uncomfortable about the person even after you have checked their identity with us, do not let them in and arrange for an alternative DEA.

Government Safety Advice:
LOCK. keep front and back doors locked (with keys taken out), even when at home;

STOP. stop and think if anyone is expected; look through a spy hole or window to identify the caller;

CHAIN. put the door chain or door bar on first before opening the door, and keep it on whilst talking to the caller; (Normally when the door is shut and locked, the bar or chain can be left off to get out in an emergency).

CHECK. check their identity card carefully even if the caller has a pre-arranged appointment (close the door whilst doing this; ring to verify the caller's identity
